Hendersons: Bodyguards of Glencoe

The Hendersons of Glencoe held one of the most prestigious positions in Highland society — they served as hereditary bodyguards to the MacDonald Chiefs of Glencoe (MacIan). This role required absolute loyalty, exceptional martial skill, and unwavering courage.

In addition to their role as bodyguards, the Glencoe Hendersons were also renowned as hereditary pipers, providing the music that accompanied the clan in both peace and war. The dual role of piper and protector speaks to the multifaceted nature of Highland culture, where art and arms were equally valued.

The tragic Massacre of Glencoe in 1692, when government troops killed members of the MacDonald clan under trust of hospitality, also affected the Henderson families who lived among them. This event remains one of the most infamous episodes in Scottish history.
