Tartans

The Clan Henderson tartan comes in five primary variations. The specific pattern ("sett") is more important than its colours — clan linkages can be seen in similar tartan backgrounds with only minor variations.

The colours in tartans came from local plant-based dyes. Red was rare — families with red in their tartan were considered wealthier. Dark earth tones were common for hunting clans. The Henderson tartan is nearly identical to the Gunn tartan but without the red line, reflecting the historic connection between these neighbouring clans.

• Blue (large bands)

• Yellow (small stripes)
• White (small stripes, or dominant in Dress tartan)
